Yoko's Open Letter To John

I miss you, John. 27 years later, I still wish I could turn back the clock to the Summer of 1980. I remember everything - sharing our morning coffee, walking in the park together on a beautiful day, and seeing your hand stretched to mine - holding it, reassuring me that I shouldn't worry about anything because our life was good.

I had no idea that life was about to teach me the toughest lesson of all. I learned the intense pain of losing a loved one suddenly, without warning, and without having the time for a final hug and the chance to say, "I love you," for the last time. The pain and shock of that sudden loss is with me every moment of every day. When I touched John's side of our bed on the night of December 8th, 1980, I realized that it was still warm. That moment has haunted me for the past 27 years - and will stay with me forever.

A Tribute To Fats Domino

As far as charity discs are concerned, Goin’ Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino is a rather generous helping of good will. For one, the roster of artists who contributed recordings to this collection is a fantastic cross-section of top rock, blues, jazz and roots talent: Tom Petty, B.B. King, Randy Newman, Willie Nelson, Herbie Hancock, and Toots & the Maytals are all there, among many others. There’s even an old John Lennon recording of “Ain’t That a Shame,” which would be a nice bonus if it wasn’t already available elsewhere and if it was even a tenth as good as Cheap Trick’s version (or Fats’ own original). But it’s John Lennon, and if he were alive he’d probably have contributed something new. Since he’s not, this is what we get.

I was listening to some samples through the iTunes music store (though I won't purchase DRM'd music and try to buy used whenever possible) and I really want this CD.

John Lennon And Paul McCartney - A Toot And A Snore In '74

It was just another Sunday night in the studio. March 31, 1974 to be exact, right in the middle of John Lennon's infamous "lost weekend." Kicked out of the house by Yoko, he was producing Harry Nilsson's Pussy Cats and doing a lot of coke. "You want a toot, Steve? A snort? It's going around," he asks Stevie Wonder (!) at the beginning of these sloppy, drug-addled sessions, notable not only because they capture Lennon at his lowest point but because Paul McCartney was sitting in.

Yoink!

Tolerance

This issue seems to be popping up a lot in my life as of late, and I want to set the record clear. I'm not a big fan of hate. Hate is defined by Wikipedia as "an emotion of intense revulsion, distaste, enmity, or antipathy for a person, thing, or phenomenon; a desire to avoid, restrict, remove, or destroy its object." Wanting to destroy something is pretty intense. I'm most certainly not a fan of bigots, "people who hates opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from their own."

If you get to know me and it turns out that you're just not a fan and don't like me, that's fine. I'm OK with that. I'm not everyone's cup of tea. What I am not OK with is someone prejudging me and disliking me because of my skin color (though I am white so this is not something I have to worry about often), my sex (though I am male), my height (though I am tall), my intelligence or anything else. I understand that these attributes will often give me an unfair leg up in life. And I will forever question if I got something because of the initial impression I made that so happened to include all of the above or did I get it because I earned it. It does bother me at work that when I answer the phone, it is automatically assumed that I am an attorney because I am male. Yes, things are unfair and people need to stop being so damn judgmental.

A post was made to MetaFilter, Why is reverse racism ok? that seems to have stirred up some discussion. I don't want to address the discussion that ensued, but rather the question posed. I think the question should have omitted the word reverse. Why? Because I racism is not defined as whites hating blacks. Rather, it is defined as "a hatred or intolerance of another race or other races." The question should have been "Why is racism ok?" and the answer is it's not. I have never been a fan of exclusionary groups as I strongly believe they serve to polarize society.

I also believe that you can be pro-something without being anti-something else. You can be pro-black, that is you can believe blacks are equal, have rights, should be treated like everyone else, etc without being anti-white. The second you become anti-anything, you're just another hate group. You can be pro-female without being anti-male. You can be pro-religion without being anti-science.

Don't try and put someone else or someone else's ideas down. Make yours better. There is far too much hate in this small world. We've all got to learn to live together. Segregation, exclusionary meetings, anti-something people need to understand tolerance:

Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance is harmony in difference.

We view tolerance as a way of thinking and feeling — but most importantly, of acting — that gives us peace in our individuality, respect for those unlike us, the wisdom to discern humane values and the courage to act upon them.

John Lennon had it right all along when he said:

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
All right, all right

You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We're doing what we can
But when you want money
for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
All right, all right

Yes, the world needs to be made better, but making it better by knocking others down is not the way to do it. We don't need more people with "minds that hate" but instead, we need more tolerance.

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Feel free to disagree, that's your right as a free-thinking individual.

Three Days Of Stuff

Friday, I left work early and drove up to Dutchess County Stadium to see Bob Dylan play. One of the opening bands was a bluegrass band and they played Orange Blossom Special, which was totally awesome. Dylan himself was pretty good. For an encore he played It Ain't Me Babe and All Along The Watchtower. A really good show. The drive back sucked a bit due to the rain.

On Saturday, I wanted to see the water (big storm, lots of wind), so I drove to Jones Beach. Then I went out to lunch, which was alright. Since my parents didn't tell me that they were having company until just then, I had to come up with something to do for the day. I've never been to Montauk, so I decided to drive out. Blech, the Hamptons suck. Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure. But Montauk was nice. The wind was insane and the water was awesome. I really want to go back there one a day when the skies are blue and take some pictures. I find a few nice overlooks hidden away.

On Sunday, I spent the day organizing and cleaning because I'm OCD like that. Went out to dinner, which logistically wasn't the greatest, but it was alright.

Today, I was supposed to meet up with Tom. I haven't seen him in over a year, but we've chatted over IM. I think that it is pretty much my fault, but whatever. Anyhow, last minute things came up, so I told him that since I was planning on heading to Central Park next weekend, that I'd meet up with him then.

Also, I've discovered Pink Floyd's Atom Mother Heart Suite. Wow. Seriously, this is some good stuff. I can't believe I've never heard this before, especially as someone who owns The Wall on DVD, is a brass player and likes crazy, trippy epics.
